Privacy Policy

Edulink ("we", "our", "the app") is a social network for university students. This page explains what information we collect, how we use it, who can see it, and the choices you have, including how to delete your account and data.

Information we collect

Account and profile information

Email address and password (used for sign-in through Firebase Authentication), or, if you choose "Continue with Google" or "Continue with Apple", the name and email address on that account. Apple lets you hide your email address, in which case we receive a private relay address from Apple instead
A username that you choose when you sign up, which other users can see
Display name, university, academic level and course, which you provide during registration
The communities you join
The interests you pick when you sign up and, if you choose them, your favourite football clubs and movie genres. We use them to shape your feed and to suggest people and communities
Optional extras you choose to add: a bio, a profile picture, a linked GitHub account, and a pinned Spotify song
A record of when you accepted our Terms of Use

Content you create

Posts, comments and voice-note replies, with any images and voice recordings you upload
Messages you send in community Rooms (group chats) and in direct messages
Links you share, including links to Spotify, TikTok, Instagram and YouTube
Your follows, followers, friends and likes
Reports you file about content or people, and the list of people you have blocked

Ranks, Clout and streaks

Game ranks and Clout scores shown on your profile. These are assigned by our reviewers or earned through activity in the app.
If you link GitHub, your public GitHub activity is used to show your GitHub stats and streak on your profile.

Automatically collected information

Basic device and app diagnostics needed to keep the app running reliably
A device token, so we can send you push notifications
Advertising identifiers, on devices where the app shows ads (see Google AdMob below)

How we use this information

To provide the app's features: your account, communities, feed, friends and messaging
To personalise your feed and suggest people and communities, using the interests you picked and how you use the app
To show your posts, comments and profile to other users as the app's social features intend (see "Who can see what")
To send you notifications, for example when someone follows you, messages you, or comments on your post
To keep the community safe: reviewing reports, removing content that breaks our community rules, and acting on accounts that do
To show ads, on devices where the app shows them
To maintain and improve the app's reliability and security

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

Who can see what

Posts, comments, your username and your profile can be seen by other Edulink users.
Room messages can be seen by the members of that Room.
Direct messages can be seen by the people in that conversation. They are stored on our servers and are not end-to-end encrypted. If someone reports a message, a short excerpt is included in the report so we can review it.
Reports can be seen only by us.
Your block list is private to you.

Third-party services we use

Sign in with Apple	If you choose "Continue with Apple" (on iPhone), Apple confirms who you are and shares your name and email address with us, or a private relay address if you chose to hide it. Apple's own privacy policy applies to that sign-in
Google AdMob	Displays ads; may use advertising identifiers as governed by Google's own privacy policy
RevenueCat	Manages paid plans where they are offered. It receives an anonymous app ID and your purchase information
GitHub (optional)	If you link your GitHub account, we sign you in to GitHub to confirm it and show your public GitHub statistics on your profile
Spotify, TikTok, Instagram (Meta) and YouTube	Show previews and players for links that you or others share (see below)

Each of these providers processes data under their own privacy policies and security practices, in addition to the protections described here.

Links and embedded content

When a post, message or profile contains a link to Spotify, TikTok, Instagram or YouTube, the app asks that platform for a preview of the link. The link we send has tracking parts removed. If you open the player, it loads the platform's own embedded player inside the app. That platform may collect information such as your IP address and device details, under its own privacy policy. We do not control what those platforms collect. If you would rather not load them, simply do not open the links.

Links to Netflix work differently: the app loads nothing from Netflix, and only opens Netflix (its app or website) if you tap the link.

Reports, blocking and moderation

You can report posts, comments, messages and people, and block people, from inside the app. Blocking someone hides their content from you and stops them from messaging you. Reports are reviewed by us, and we aim to review them within 24 hours. We may remove content or act on accounts that break our community rules. We also use an automatic check that stops posts, comments, Room messages, community names, bios and usernames containing certain words from being posted publicly; it does not read private direct messages. We may keep reports, including who filed them and a short excerpt of the content, for as long as we need them to keep people safe or to meet legal duties.

How long we keep your data

We keep your account information and content for as long as you have an account. You can delete individual posts and comments at any time. When you delete your account, we delete your data as described below. We may keep reports, as explained above.

Your choices and rights

Deleting your account

You can delete your account at any time, directly in the app: Settings → Account actions → Delete account. You will be asked to confirm that it is you: with your password, or, if you signed up with Google or Apple, by choosing that account again.

Straight away: your account, profile and posts are deleted and you are signed out.
Within 30 days: we remove what is left, including your chats, your Room messages, your comments on other people's posts, your follower lists, and the photos and voice notes you uploaded.
What may be kept: reports about abuse that involve you, where we need them to keep people safe or to follow the law.

If you signed in with Apple, we also revoke Edulink's access to your Apple ID when your account is deleted.

Deleting an account cannot be undone. If you no longer have the app, you can request deletion from our account deletion page or by emailing us at the address below from the email address you signed up with.

Accessing or correcting your data

Most of your information (display name, university, course, bio) can be edited directly in Settings. For anything else, contact us using the details below.

Data storage and security

Your data is stored using industry-standard providers (Google Firebase and Cloudflare) with access controls limiting who can read or modify it. We do not have direct access to your account password; authentication is handled by Firebase.

Children's privacy

Edulink is for university students aged 16 and over. It is not directed at anyone under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe someone under 16 has an account, contact us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above.
